Perugia worth a visit!!

Yesterday Gaia and I (Amina) went to Perugia for business. It was the first time there for both. Our review? What a wonderful town! The historic center is easily reacheable by "minimetrò" and the Piazza IV Novembre with its Fontana Maggiore is really amazing. Last but not least there are lots of beautiful stores for shopping.

Come i 150 anni dell'Unità d'Italia, saranno 150, su 660, quest'anno, i luoghi che, in occasione della Giornata FAI di primavera 2011, saranno dedicati al Risorgimento italiano. CARNEVALE: i cenci

Dolcetti delicati, leggeri e croccanti che profumano di vaniglia.

Ecco la ricetta di Lella Cesari Ciampoli:

INGREDIENTI:

* 300 gr di farina 00

* 50 gr di zucchero

* 40 gr di burro liquefatto

* 2 uova

* scorza di arancio grattata

* 1 bicchierino di Vin Santo

* 1 pizzico di sale

* olio di semi di arachidi

* zucchero a velo vanigliato

PREPARAZIONE:

Appena fatto l'impasto, avvolgetelo nella pellicola e fatelo riposare in frigo per circa 20 minuti. Tirare una sfoglia sottilissima e ritagliare, con la rotella dentata, dei rombi non troppo piccoli. Friggere in abbondante olio molto caldo, scolare su carta assorbente ed impolverare i cenci con abbondante zucchero a velo.

Lella Cesari Ciampoli ha fondato la prima Scuola di Cucina a Siena, dove insegna da molti anni. E' iscritta all'International Association of Cooking Professionals di Washington D.C. ed è insegnante dell'AICI (Associazione insegnanti di cucina italiana).

Collabora saltuariamente con le maggiori riviste italiane del settore. Grande successo ha avuto il suo libro di ricette "Felicità della cucina italiana". Collabora con numerose aziende agrituristiche locali ed è nota nell'ambiente contradaiolo senese per aver tenuto lezioni di cucina ai "gruppi donne". Profonda conoscitrice e ricercatrice di antiche ricette della cucina toscana e medievale, è diventata punto di riferimento anche per i professionisti del settore. La Scuola di Cucina di Lella è stata riconosciuta tra le prime cento scuole di Cucina Italiana.

Meleto and Brolio are two famous Castles of the Chianti area which are open for visits.

The Castle of Meleto belonged to the Benedictine monks of the Coltibuono Abbey. The name "Meleto in Chianti" appears for the first time in 1269, in the Florentine Guelphs' "Libro degli Estimi", as the property of the family of Rainerii de Ricasolis. The Ricasoli family extended and embellished the building over the centuries, and today the Castle still has its massive 15 th century fortifications with an imposing cylindrical tower built as protection against artillery fire. But there is also the aristocratic grace of the villa nobile, with its sequence of furnished and decorated rooms, and an unparalleled 18th century theatre.

You can visit the Castle of Meleto during all the year.

The visit hours are fixed as follow:

- Monday: 3.00 p.m. & 4.30 p.m.

- from Tuesday to Saturday: 11.30 a.m. – 3.00 p.m. & 4.30 p.m.

- Sunday: 11.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. & 5.00 p.m.

You can also require a wine tasting of their own wines.

Sarà l'Arch. Pasquale Fonte, membro dell'International Feng Shui Research Center, a curare il corso.

Siamo praticamente a Dicembre. Il mese dello shopping, regali e chi più ne ha più ne metta.....

Il Natale però ci richiama alla solidarietà e ci chiede un piccolo sforzo affinchè ci sia speranza per tutti.

Per questo motivo il Borgo Grondaie ha deciso di aiutare il CAV, associazione di volontari che cerca di aiutare le madri in difficoltà.

In questo momento hanno estremo bisogno di pannolini dalla misura 0 alla 5. Le loro scorte si sono esaurite e non avendo contributi fissi da enti si rimettono sempre al buon cuore dei sostenitori.

Il Borgo Grondaie acquisterà, con la collaborazione di alcuni nostri fornitori, 30 confezioni di pannolini per tamponare la situazione. Ma sappiamo bene che è una goccia nel mare.

Florence and his mayer Mr. Renzi has won the first cultural place award from Tripadvisor.

Firenze is the first city in the Top 10 Culture & Sightseeing Destinations in the World choosen by all tripadvisor members all over the world.

My opinion: Mr. Renzi is a great mayer because he has perfectly undestood the direction they have to follow to stay on the upper position for tourism excellence.

Just a taunt for Siena town council: Siena is on the 8th place as Top 25 Destinations in the World and Top 25 Destinations in the World chosen by Europeans. Has nobody never thought to organize a party/conference or to invite Tripadvisor and create around that an event?

Someone must remember to my mayer and his town concillors that social network offer you great opportunity....if you are able to seize it.

Perhaps you do not know that among the six heritage sites in Tuscany four of them are in the area of Siena: what a privilege it is for us!

Here is the list and the selection criteria of UNESCO for each one of them:

Historic Centre of Siena from 1995

Siena is the embodiment of a medieval city. Its inhabitants pursued their rivalry with Florence right into the area of urban planning. Throughout the centuries, they preserved their city's Gothic appearance, acquired between the 12th and 15th centuries. During this period the work of Duccio, the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini was to influence the course of Italian and, more broadly, European art. The whole city of Siena, built around the Piazza del Campo, was devised as a work of art that blends into the surrounding landscape.

Criteria:

- to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius;

- to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design;

- to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history.

Historic Centre of San Gimignano from 1990

'San Gimignano delle belle Torri' is in Tuscany, 56 km south of Florence. It served as an important relay point for pilgrims travelling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena. The patrician families who controlled the town built around 72 tower-houses (some as high as 50 m) as symbols of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano has retained its feudal atmosphere and appearance. The town also has several masterpieces of 14th- and 15th-century Italian art.

- to bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared;

Historic Centre of the city of Pienza from 1996

It was in this Tuscan town that Renaissance town-planning concepts were first put into practice after Pope Pius II decided, in 1459, to transform the look of his birthplace. He chose the architect Bernardo Rossellino, who applied the principles of his mentor, Leon Battista Alberti. This new vision of urban space was realized in the superb square known as Piazza Pio II and the buildings around it: the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia Palace and the cathedral with its pure Renaissance exterior and an interior in the late Gothic style of south German churches.

Val d’Orcia from 2004

The landscape of Val d’Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries to reflect an idealized model of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing picture. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics, flat chalk plains out of which rise almost conical hills with fortified settlements on top, inspired many artists. Their images have come to exemplify the beauty of well-managed Renaissance agricultural landscapes. The inscription covers: an agrarian and pastoral landscape reflecting innovative land-management systems; towns and villages; farmhouses; and the Roman Via Francigena and its associated abbeys, inns, shrines, bridges, etc.

- to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history;

- to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance. (The Committee considers that this criterion should preferably be used in conjunction with other criteria).

Historic Centre of Florence from 1982

Built on the site of an Etruscan settlement, Florence, the symbol of the Renaissance, rose to economic and cultural pre-eminence under the Medici in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its 600 years of extraordinary artistic activity can be seen above all in the 13th-century cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore), the Church of Santa Croce, the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace, the work of great masters such as Giotto, Brunelleschi, Botticelli and Michelangelo.

Criteria:

Piazza del Duomo, Pisa from 1987

Standing in a large green expanse, Piazza del Duomo houses a group of monuments known the world over. These four masterpieces of medieval architecture – the cathedral, the baptistry, the campanile (the 'Leaning Tower') and the cemetery – had a great influence on monumental art in Italy from the 11th to the 14th century.

Criteria:

- to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius;

- to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history; to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance. I think the above information can be helpful for you in saving time when you plan your first visit in Tuscany. We have lots of wonderful locations to visit but it is important to know from where to start. It could be a shame for you to discover at home that you missed a ‘must’.

CATHEDRAL SQUARE

Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption, was completed in the main parts by 1215. The design of Siena was very ambitious so they wanted to transform the current in a cathedral in size that exceeds that of rival historical Florence, the existing structure was even made in the transept of what to build, but unfortunately the plague of 1348 decimated the population and other problems became so well the Sienese had to give up dreams of grandeur. Signs of this project are however still visible on the right of the cathedral because the work had already started before the plague.

- Floor, (visible only in September and October): divided into 56 squares, representing the history of Time, Man and Salvation. Carried out between

1300 and 1500 by the greatest artists of Siena.

Aisles: the representation of the Sibyl, with priestesses of prophecy inspired by the god Apollo. The Western Church, interpreting what they said such as the advances of Christian history, recognized them as the prophets of the coming of Christ, pagan equivalent of the Old Testament prophets. Each fact has a scroll that contains the anticipation of an event in the life of Jesus

Nave: Wisdom, represented by an Egyptian sage, is the first holder of Revelation but the passage from Revelation has a need for temporal and spatial dimension. The central area is in fact devoted to the representations that represent the territory and the representation of temporal power, subject to human life and the superiority of wisdom on it.

Presbytery: stories of Moses

- Pulpit: depicts scenes from the life of Christ, carved by Nicola Pisano 1266 to 1268.

- Madonna del Voto: school of Guido da Siena, the second half of the century. XIII.

- Libreria Piccolomini frescoes on the life of Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini, future Pope Pius II, executed by Pinturicchio between 1502 and 1507.

Opa Museum: a magnificent panorama of the city you can see from the 'facciatone'.

- Majesty: performed by Duccio from 1308 to 1311. Work characterized by great refinement of execution. Images are graceful, accurate definition of the details and built across the line and color. Keep in mind this representation to surprise again in comparison with the same subject by Simone Martini in the Museo Civico.

Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala, now a museum: this structure, much like a labyrinth, was the hospital until the '90s.

- The Pilgrimage: frescoes by Domenico di Bartolo and Vecchietta from 1440 to 1443. The scenes represented recount the origins of this hospital was born in the Middle Ages as a place for the reception of pilgrims traveling to the city and as a structure in which they perform deeds of charity.

PIAZZA DEL CAMPO

The square, built during the rule of the Nine (1287-1355: a period of greater stability and artistic splendor of the Republic of Siena) in the form of a valve of a shell to take advantage of the natural slope of the land. In this place twice a year, on July 2 and August 16, there is the famous horse race called Palio.

- Fonte Gaia: a nineteenth century copy made by the sculptor Tito Sarrocchi. The original, made by Jacopo della Quercia in 1409, is preserved in the Museum Santa Maria della Scala.

- Torre del Mangia: finished building in 1341. It is '87 meters high and 102 to the lightning rod. It is so called by the nickname of the bell-ringer of Balduccio John, better known as Mangiaguadagni or Mangia, charged by the city to beat the clock. At the top of the tower there is a large bell that the Sienese call Campanone or Sunto because dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.

- Palazzo Pubblico: started after 1250 and completed in 1310.

- Cappella di Piazza, built in 1352 to commemorate the plague of 1348.

Museo Civico:

- Majesty: performed by Simone Martini in 1315. Although only 4 years have elapsed from the majesty of the Museum OPA performed by Duccio di Boninsegna, contemporary then Simone Martini, it seems a century has passed so big is the difference in the figurative representation of the same subject, because the Majesty of Simone Martini, unlike that of Duccio, is characterized by the wealth of decorative images. The spirit of chivalry and profane time is reflected in this scene even though the subject is sacred: Saints, dressed in rich costumes, surround Mary receiving gifts from the Angels, kneeling on either side of his throne as a page in front of a lady .

- Guidoriccio da Fogliano, captain of the Sienese by Simone Martini in 1328.

- Allegory of Good Government and Bad Government and its effects in urban and rural: made by Ambrogio Lorenzetti from 1338 to 1340. Works characterized by attention to the elements of naturalistic.

SIENA: worth a visit

Our beloved city has got a great recognition on 2010.

The very well known website Tripadvisor has drawn up the 25 world top Destinations ranking and Siena appears to 8th place.

It’s also first among the top 25 Destinations in Italy chosen by

Winery in Montepulciano

We have already suggested you here the winery Tenuta di Valdipiatta in Montepulciano and now I'll tell you why.

Our region, Tuscany, is full of wineries so it is not possible for us to know each one of them.

But, as the saying goes, if Mohammed will not go to the mountain the mountain goes to Muhammad, and something like that happened to me with Tenuta Valdipiatta.

In Italy we have a daily program TV called TG2 Costume e Società and I have to thanks this program for introducing me to this winery.

In fact, on February 27th, 2009 this program spoke about the Tenuta Valdipiatta, its products and the project Adopt a barrel.

Fortunately I was at home watching the TV at that moment and what impressed me too much was the project Adopt a barrel. It offers to wine lovers wishing to become winemakers, without owning either vineyards or cellars.

When adopting a barrel

you become the principal player in their wine producing process and create a product that totally satisfies your own taste. At the same time you start a personal and very privileged partnership with the Estate.

I have not had yet the opportunity to visit Tenuta di Valdipiatta but I recommended that to some guests of Borgo Grondaie and they loved it and thanks me a lot for the suggestion.

Following the visit to the cellar and the barrel tasting, there will be a tasting of 3 of Tenuta valdipiatta's choicest wines, which will be uncorked espressly for our guests, and will be accompained by Valdipiatta Rxtra Virgin Olive Oil served on slices of Tuscan bread.

If you are planning a tour in Sangimignano and you are fond of gardening it's worth to drive few kilometers more to reach Vico d'Elsa to see the succulents and cactus glasshouse.
The entrance is free and all the paths are organized for persons with a physical disability.
They are open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday but check on their web site before to go (timetable can change with seasons).

If you have already been at Borgo Grondaie I'm sure you recognize the furniture of the pictures in this post. They are part of the furniture of our Reception and always win admiration from our guests.

Usually the questions of our guests are 'what was that before?' and 'who made that?'

Well, these such as the furniture of all our rooms and apartments were made by a local wood craftsmanship that produces custom furniture also through the restoration of old things.

When they started to work they were two members, Nardi & Pattaro. Currently Nardi decided to retire while Pattaro continues his activities and he still collaborate with Borgo Grondaie.

In a few days, September 25 & 26, there will be the inauguration of a new laboratory and showroom in Monteriggioni, Località Badesse, under the name Falegnameria Artistica and from October 1^st it will be possible to buy his items online at the following site.

When Roberto gagliardi, an Italian-born art dealer and collector based in London, drove past and old, shut-down hotel on the main concourse of the ancient town of Chianciano Terme, in the Italian province of Siena, he saw an opportunuty. After four years of renovation, the 150-years-old building has been converted into the just-opened Museum of Art of Chianciano http://www.museodarte.org/
The museum now houses Mr. Gagliardi's impressive collection, accumulated over 30-years career, items from which have been lent to museums like Cincinnati Art Museum and the Metropolitan of Art in New York.
The museum is now home to works by artists like Delacroix and Dalì, Goya and Rembrandt, as well as historical pieces from China's Han Dynasty and ninth-century sculptural fragments from Afghanistan.
In addition Mr. Gagliardi is organizing a new contemporary art festival to run at the museum every two years.

Some months ago a Sushi Bar opened here in Siena and it was an immediate success.

The dishes are prepared with fresh products every day and when this is not possible because fish suppliers are closed -as it happened for example during Christmas time- the owners immediately publish a post in their facebook fan’s page warning they will be closed.

Although reservations can be made on facebook it is better to call by phone to get a more immediate response.

We are delighted to have a place like that in Siena because many Japanese come here for holiday or to attend the University for Foreigners or the summer courses organized by the Academy Musicale Chigiana and although our food is wonderful, it is nice to have an alternative meal.

I had never eaten sushi but I was too curious so I went there with Gaia few days ago.

We could not cheat so we asked the owner for an advise. The only raw fish I had eaten in my life was Cebiche (Peruvian meal) and oysters.

He was very friendly and he suggested us a mixture of uromaki (tuna and avocado rolled with rice outside), maki (seaweed rolls nori), nigiri (raw fish on the 'ball' of rice acetate), sashimi (raw fish fillet) and tempura (fried) shrimp and vegetables. Gaia chose the drink: an excellent white wine Falanghina.

As soon as dishes arrived I realized that I actually had to eat with chopsticks ... In fact there was nothing else on the table. All in all everything went very well and maybe I learned how to use this kind of cutlery.

I really liked the food. I've enjoyed the tempura.

At the end of the meal we ordered a small jug of saké, a 13 degrees alcoholic beverage served hot. It seemed like grappa. Maybe because it was hot it did not seem so strong and I drank that without problems!

There are so many other things in the menu that I will have to try. There is also the option of take away. Very interesting.

The place is small, a dozen tables plus the counter, minimalist design and well cared for. A nice atmosphere located close to Porta Ovile.

The staff was friendly, the site is very pretty sitting on five acres, there was a washing machine and a line to dry clothes outside. The breakfast was included with the room and the baked goods were delicious. This place is best for someone with a car who wants to see more of Tuscany than just Siena. It is a little out of the way (about a 20 minute walk to the center of Siena) and not close to any restaurants. There a great grocery at the bottom of the hill though which has an excellent selection of breads, cheeses, sliced meats and wine. If the weather is nice one could take this back to the hotel and sit outside for dinner or lunch.

This small hotel has a delightful atmosphere. It is set in a spacious garden on a hillside just outside the centre of Siena. It provides a peaceful oasis to return to at the end of a busy day.

Of all the accommodation we stayed at during our recent trip to Europe, Borgo Grondaie was the best overall. The room itself was spacious, impeccably clean throughout and well appointed. We also enjoyed a private balcony with views to the ancient city of Siena. The breakfast was befitting of a banquet and consisted of the freshest of local produce. The large gardens and pool area were great to experience after a hot day visiting the many fantastic tourist sites that Siena has to offer. The staff of Borgo Grondaie also deserve a special mention. We would certainly stay there again.

We would definitely recommend the Hotel Borgo Grondaie and would certainly stay there again. The hotel is very charming, clean and accommodating. The front desk helped us with many things, including obtaining a reservation for the Uffizi art museum for our day trip into Florence (which proved to be a big time saver) and securing a reservation for our Brunello di Montalcino wine tour. They were also very helpful in giving us information and tips for when we went into Siena. Although the hotel is not in the heart of Siena it is not far to the city walls and is very easy to get there. We chose to visit the nearby market to get some food and wine, and decided to make ourselves dinner a couple of nights which was a very nice change of pace that would not have been possible at other hotels. All in all, I would tell someone considering this hotel to book it without hesitation.

November 2009

My husband and I just returned from our trip to Tuscany a few days ago and we stayed at Borgo Grondaie for one night in Siena. The hotel is beautiful! Quiet, the staff/service is excellent, great breakfast, free WIFI and a computer to use. The rooms are spacious, very clean, quiet and the bed is moderately comfy (typical for Europe).

However, the walk into the center of town is at least 2 miles uphill. The hotel does have parking, so if you have a car, then this is the place to stay. There is no parking inside the medieval village walls, so it's best to leave your car in the parking lot at the hotel, then take a taxi into the village. If you are in good shape, the walk back to the hotel is ok, mostly downhill.

I felt as though one night in Siena was enough, so even without a car, I might stay here again. If you are staying a few days and have a kitchen, this is also a great place because there is a grocery store very convenient!!

If you are going to San Gim, or Volterra, I would rent a car at Hertz in Siena and make SURE you get a GPS, you will regret it if you don't.

So, generally I have only positive things to say about this hotel, except for the walk uphill into town.

Just returned from this Hotel. Stayed for 4 nights with my wife and had a great time.

All the staff was always friendly and very helpful.

One of the cleanest Hotels i have ever been. And not only our Room, but was perfectly cleaned all the complex.

Plenty of hot water in our room at all times and a great breakfast every morning with big variety and great quality products. It was very cold outside but our room was always very warm as the heating was very efficient.

Good located to visit Toscane, in a quiet place with a super market nearby for all your needs.

That was the best escape for me and my wife.

Our Next time in Italy will also be a next time in Borgo Grandaie.

Palio festival tips

The Contrade of Siena are 17 but only 10 run the Palio on July 2nd and on August 16th.

Which one of the 17 Contrade do they run it?

The seven Contrade that have not held in July/August last year run by 'law' while the other 3 missing to 10 by 'lot' among the remaining 10.

How do they choice the last?

in much secrecy in Palazzo Pubblico where the captains of the 17 Contrade meet and with the help of a secular tool and a complex ritual ensure 100% impartiality of choice. Once the Contrade were extracted - around 7.00 p.m. - all the people wait in the Square that a municipal employer exhibits the flags of the Contrade extracted from the windows of the Palazzo Pubblico. Each 'expousure' is accompained by shouts of joy of the contradioli's (people who belong to a Contrada) kissed by fortune and, in some cases, by the 'silence' of the people of the rival Contrade.

When does it happen?

The last Sunday of May for the Palio of July and the Sunday after July 2nd for the Palio of August.

I have talked about 'rival' Contrade. Do you want to know why? well, we don't remind it because it comes from log time...

The Palio begins on June 29th/August 13th:

around 1.00 p.m. at the Campo square the horse will be assigned to each Contrada by lot. This moment is called 'tratta' and it's very important because although the horses are chosen so that none is superior to another, however, it can happen that horses which have already won the Palio are chosen and therefore outsider among the others.

The horse, called 'barbero', is the unique starring of the Palio. In fact, the Contrada wins also if the horse arrives at the end of the 3 laps alone, without the jockey. It means that the horse can't be replaced, neither if it dies. The horse is entrusted to the 'barbaresco' who leads it to the stable of its Contrada and remains with it 24 hours a day until the last race to take care of it and to control nobody give it alterated drinks.

- from June 29th/August 13th evening till July 2nd/August 16th morning six 'prove' (trials) are run in the Square to test the horses. The most awited trial is the first because it is the first time that the jockeys ride the horses, know them and try to understand their potential.

- on July 1st/August 15th evening there is the evening's rehearsal dinner along the Contrade streets which run. The dinner is open also to tourists. Of course, dear tourists, don't have too many expectations about the welcome and the menù. The Palio is not a festival for tourists so, be respectful and not intrusive.

After dinner, the authorities of each Contrada will take secret deals with the other Contrade. Everyone knows that but no one confirme it openly. During the night they take the last agreements with those which can 'help' them to win the Palio.

- Also the 'fantini', the jockeys, are important of course. Until the penultimate trial the Contrada may also change the jockey or the jockey may decide not to run for that Contrada. You will know the jockey's name by sure only with the 'provaccia', the last trial on the morning of July 2nd/August 16th. At that point , the jockey can no longer be changed.

In recent years a good quoted jockey is from Siena. His name is Luigi Bruschelli and his nickname is Trecciolino. The jockey can run in any Contrada but of course it's better if he doesn't run for a Contrada if the year before it ran and won in its rival Contrada...

Check schedule of July 2nd and August 16th so that you will be able to know all that will happen that day.

At Borgo Grondaie our customers ask often us where it's better to see the Palio. In my opinion:

- if you are young and strong psychologically you can go and see the race standing in the middle of the Square. Thanks to the shape of the Square you can see from all sides. A recommendation to 'gentlemen': don't load on your shoulders your friend to can see better because all the people around you will whistle to you.

- if you are young but you have also children with you it's better to go in advance to the Cathedral and sit down on the outside stairs to see the Parade. When the Parade ends go inside the closest to see the race on TV. As soon as the run ends go to the church of Provenzano (on July) or to the Cathedral (on August) to see the winner Contrada coming to thanks and to sing Te deum to our Lady.

- if you are not so young and want to enjoy the rush in peace I suggest you to buy tickets to see the whole parade and the race comfortably seated in the stages or in a terrace. The best seats are those near the 'mossa', the start. Tickets are very expensive but it's worth it, believe me!

Last recommendations:

- during the days of the Palio avoid to peeve the people of the Contrada with questions on why, how, etc or to show visibly 'surprised' or 'horrified' by some of their attitudes. For example, if you are in the middle of a brawl on the street it could be that you are in the presence of a clash between two rival Contrade. Nobody will get you but avoid to stay in the middle or to do your best in separating them. Be sure that when the Palio ends the life in Siena returns to normality!

- everywhere you see the race: in the Square, on the terrace or in a Bar avoid making comments immediately after the race ends. We will give you all the information at the front desk. Avoid 'smile' if you see people crying because they didn't win or arrived second (threre is only '1' winner in the Palio) or they rival Contrada won.

The evening, after dinner, you can visit the Contrada that won end enjoy a free glass of wine. It's better if you take dinner in the Square so that you can see people of the winner Contrada coming with their 'alfieri', the flag-wavers, to show the 'cencio', the banner, that represents the prize for the victory and that will then be kept in the museum of the Contrada.

New Moon: Montepulciano turns into Volterra

Although no longer a teenager I have been fascinated by the first film in the Twilight saga without having read the book an because of that when New Moon came out last week I went straight to the cinema but ... maybe I had too many expectations.

The mystery, magic and the feeling present in Twilight and which I loved have been replaced in New Moon by a sense of romanticism sometimes maybe a little bit overload.

It was so fanny watching the film in a cinema full of kids, especially girls, which at every stage made particularly appreciative comments about Edward, the vampire, which unfortunately in this film we see little.

Lots of words were written in newspapers, social networks and Internet regarding the location of the scenes in Italy because the book talks about 'volturi' and 'Volterra', a small village of Etruscan origin in the country side of Pisa; a spot well-known in the world like San Gimignano, Chianti and Montalcino. It is a must for tourists who annually visit Tuscany.

In the film I found the medieval town of Montepulciano instead of Volterra!

I had no trouble on recognizing that because in the main scene there is the famous Renaissance Basilica of San Biagio in the background. One more thing: there are no fountains in Montepulciano and Volterra square while in New Moon they show one.

It is a shame. I do not like this kind of things. I know, it is not the first time that it happens. Do you remind the movie The English Patient and the famous frescoes of Piero della Francesca put in Pienza instead of the church of San Francesco in Arezzo?

Let me say you that when I remind the scenes filmed in Siena for the movie Quantum of Solace I am very pleased and proud of the work made by the Consortium for the Protection of the Palio that guaranteed the reality of Siena.

This is just my opinion and of course both, Volterra and Montepulciano, worth a visit regardless New Moon :-)

Well you know it’s interesting because ultimately Stephanie didn’t visit Italy until after she had written the books, you know? It was kind of like her research was all kind of online and whatnot. And what we did as filmmakers…okay we know what we need for the movie. Great square, huge group of people kind of in the middle, clock tower that you can see. It has to feel like beautiful epic, all that stuff because we’ve been waiting the whole movie for her to get back to Edward and we want it to be great. So we took a trip, went around like 12 different towns in Tuscany and we just literally went from square…each of those small ancient towns has a great square with a church and a tower and everything and we basically found the one that we thought was the best in terms of just atmosphere, you know, what it’s going to feel like. And we went, 'That’s it. That’s great.' And sometimes it’s about just the symmetry of the square. There’s always that one thing in a town you’re like 'I love that. I love that. Ahh that doesn’t work' you know? So we got to Montepulciano it was like 'Great. It works.' It’s perfect, you know?

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: la Civetta

La Contrada della Civetta ha il suo cuore pulsante nel castellare degli Ugurgeri la cui costruzione risale agli anni che vanno dalla fine del XII all’inizio del XIII secolo.

E’ senz’altro uno dei posti più suggestivi di Siena.

All’interno del castellare, a cui si accede da due vicoli diversi, trovano posto il Museo, l’Oratorio, la Stalla e la Fontanina della Contrada.

La Contrada della Civetta ha avuto un Oratorio di sua proprietà soltanto nel 1945 con l’acquisizione di un immobile posto nel castellare.

L’Oratorio è dotato di due ingressi, uno posto in Via Cecco Angiolieri e l’altro nel castellare.

Fino al 1945 è stata ospitata dalla chiesa di San Cristoforo, in Piazza Tolomei, e prima ancora dal parroco Antonio Perpignani, contradaiolo, nella chiesa San Pietro Buio, oggi non più esistente.

Nell’Oratorio, intitolato fino all’inizio di quest’anno solo a Sant’Antonio da Padova, sono presenti le seguenti opere:

- altare di sinistra: Madonna con San Carlo Borromeo e San Luigi Gonzaga di Vincenzo Rustici

- altare di destra: Visione di Sant’Antonio di Galgano Perpignani, nipote del parroco sopra nominato

- altare: statuetta di San Bernardo Tolomei in carta pesta argentata su base lignea intagliata. Questa statuetta fa parte di un gruppo di statue che si trovano all’interno del Museo. Quella di Bernardo Tolomei si trova qui in quanto Bernardo è stato santificato proprio quest’anno da Papa Benedetto XVI e siccome il palazzo dei Tolomei si trova nel territorio della Civetta la Contrada lo ha proclamato suo compatrono. Se poi si pensa che il Palio vinto dalla Civetta quest’anno, dopo 30 anni di digiuno, è stato dedicato alla santificazione di Bernardo Tolomei sembra quasi che la nascita di questo legame fosse stato già deciso da qualche parte lassù…

Nell’Oratorio della Contrada della Civetta viene detta la Messa ogni domenica alle 10:15 ed è aperta anche al pubblico.

Dall’Oratorio si esce e si raggiunge la sede del Museo della Contrada che ha l’ingresso all’interno del castellare e dove si trova la Sala delle Vittorie.

La sede è stata ristrutturata nel 1980 ed in quel frangente fu ritrovato un pozzo di butto pieno di reperti di ceramica, monete e altri oggetti databili fra il XIV e il XVIII secolo alcuni dei quali sono esposti nella Contrada.

La Civetta è stata la Contrada che ha fatto il primo Cappotto nella storia del Palio di Siena, ha vinto cioè sia il palio di luglio che quello di agosto nell’anno 1761.

Come già anticipato sopra, l’ultima vittoria è arrivata quest’anno, ad agosto, dopo 30 anni di digiuno.

Una curiosità: ogni contrada vittoriosa organizza la Cena della Vittoria nel suo territorio. Ciò accade di solito verso la fine di settembre, inizio di ottobre. A questa cena in genere partecipano tutti i contradaioli e non solo e può succedere che se la contrada è particolarmente numerosa ci sia bisogno di spazi adeguati come è successo nel 2000 quando la contrada dell’Istrice vinse il Palio dopo 25 anni e nella Fortezza Medicea furono allestiti tavoli per 5000 commensali!

La Civetta non è una contrada così numerosa ma si sà che in queste occasioni si moltiplica il numero dei partecipanti alla cena.

Il territorio della Contrada è visibilmente molto contenuto ma i contradaioli avrebbero comunque organizzato la cena nel loro territorio solo che per l’allestimento della scenografia, dei tavoli, etc avrebbero dovuto far chiudere per alcuni giorni le vie circostanti che sono poi quelle principali del centro per cui i negozianti avrebbero inevitabilmente chiesto un risarcimento al Comune.

Insomma, per farla breve, il Comune dopo aver preso in considerazione tutte le possibilità alla fine ha proposto alla Contrada di fare la cena in Piazza del Campo.

Non era mai successo prima anche perché Piazza del Campo è una zona neutrale, non appartiene a nessuna contrada.

Nel 2005 era stata la Torre, vincitrice del Palio dopo 44 anni di attesa, a richiedere di poter fare la cena nel Campo ma non fu concesso il permesso forse perché non c’erano motivazioni tali da giustificare tale privilegio; invece per la Civetta è stato diverso.

E’ stato argomentato che in 30 anni il centro storico di Siena è cambiato molto dal punto di vista dei servizi concentrati nelle vie principali della città dove appunto si trova la Contrada della Civetta e che la chiusura di determinate vie avrebbe procurato notevoli disagi che 30 anni fa la Contrada non dovette affrontare.

E poi, la Civetta è la contrada che ha i propri confini più vicini alla Piazza.

Herewith some tips to organize better your visit in the wineries of the most famous wines of our Region: Chianti, Brunello, Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Nobile di Montepulciano...

- ‘wine tours’ include visit of the cellars with the explanation about production and wine tasting inside winery's shop. If you are a wine producer and you want to visit the vineyards you have to do a specific request;

- usually there are fixed tours during the day: one in the morning around 11 a.m., one in the afternoon around 3,00 p.m. so that you can have time enough to take lunch in one of the excellent restaurants nearby and the chance to visit two wineries in a day. For example in one day you can visit Chianti and Vernaccia wineries or Brunello and Nobile di Montepulciano area;

- rates could be fixed or depend on the number of wines you want to taste;

- on Saturday and Sunday usually you can have only the wine tasting and not the visit of the cellar. Other restrictions you can find on holiday time like Christmas and during the low season, from November to March.

- there are no public connections to reach the wineries so, if you don’t come with car, add in your list to rent a car and contact the companies in advance. For example Hertz or Avis (remind that they close on Saturday afternoon, Sunday and holidays). In you have an adventure spirit think about a tour in the Chianti region with a scooter
- book your wine tour in advance because there is a maximum number of people the wineries accept for each tour;

- wine tasting usually includes a slide of bread with oil, bread and cheese (pecorino) but I suggest you to ask in advance more details if the matter is important for you;

- if you want to ship out wine to your home ask direct the wineries; otherwise you can do it by yourself trough Mail Boxes in Siena. They are able to export in compliance with current laws governing the import of wine products also in U.S. territory;

- do in advance all your requests to the wineries: you will save time and will avoid unexpected inconveniences which could make feel you frustrated :-).

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: il Drago

L’area dove sorge l’Oratorio della Contrada del Drago è uno dei territori più disastrati di Siena dal punto di vista urbanistico; basti pensare che le scale che portano all’Oratorio sono state fatte nel 1903 per via dello sbassamento effettuato in quello che nel Medioevo era il castellare della famiglia Malavolti, oggi Piazza Matteotti, ed il cui piano era a livello dell’ingresso dell’Oratorio.

In questa area c’erano due conventi di clausura, uno di Cappuccine al posto dell’attuale Palazzo delle Poste e Telegrafi e un altro in Via del Paradiso e proprio la Chiesa Esterna di quest’ultimo fu assegnata alla Contrada del Drago nel 1787, al momento della soppressione del Convento. All’interno dell’Oratorio nelle pareti laterali dell’altare, in alto, si possono vedere delle grate dorate da dove le suore potevano seguire le funzioni e non essere viste dai fedeli.

Prima di questa chiesa la Contrada del Drago era ospite della chiesa della Compagnia di San Domenico in Camporegio la quale in cambio esigeva la consegna del drappellone di ogni Palio vinto e così fu fino al Palio del 2 luglio 1738 quando i dragaioli si rifiutarono di consegnare il drappellone creando dei dissapori che li costrinse a cercarsi un’altra sede.

Del complesso monastico l’Oratorio eredita la Madonna della Tegola, esposta sull’altare, dipinta proprio su una tegola da autore sconosciuto del ‘600. Secondo la tradizione accadde che una suora in grande occorrenza si raccomandasse alla Vergine perché la facesse guarire e la Vergine le apparse sul tetto.

Altre opere presenti ed eseguite da autori senesi:

- altare maggiore: Pietà di Francesco Rustici, detto il Rustichino, e Vincenzo Rustici nel ‘600

- altare di destra: Miracolo avvenuto a Soriano Calabro di Rutilio Manetti nel ‘600
- altare di sinistra: Matrimonio mistico di Santa Caterina da Siena di Raffaello Vanni nel ‘600

- busto in terracotta di Santa Caterina da Siena di Lorenzo di Mariano detto il Marrina nel ‘500

- figura intera di Madonna in terracotta di Lorenzo di Mariano detto il Marrina nel ‘500

- Angelo in legno intagliato e dorato che regge un leggio eseguito nel 1721 da Giovan Battista Campano

- bozzetto per una porta del Vaticano eseguita da Vico Consorti: non venne mai eseguito questo bozzetto che gli eredi hanno regalato alla Contrada; ma in cambio l’autore eseguì la Porta Santa della Basilica di San Pietro nel 1949

Dall’Oratorio la guida ci ha portato in Sagrestia dove, mostrandoci un arredo sacro di stoffa del ‘700, ci ha raccontato che un tempo il Palio era un pezzo di stoffa ricamato. Il Palio vinto poi poteva essere utilizzato per gli arredi sacri. Successivamente il Palio diventò un piatto d’argento del valore di 40 talleri e poteva succedere che, come effettivamente è accaduto da quanto ci ha riferito la guida, questo venisse fuso per realizzare una croce processionale. A quel punto però si perdevano le tracce del piatto.

In Sagrestia sono conservate numerose pianete ricamate fra le quali è da segnalare quella ricamata in oro zecchino e donata alla contrada nel 1916 da un Protettore del Drago diventato Papa con il nome di Benedetto XV.

La nostra guida ci ha raccontato che nel 1889 vennero ridisegnati gli stemmi di tutte le contrade e ciò è documentato dalla concessione di Umberto I incorniciata in Sagrestia.

Sempre in Sagrestia è custodito un paliotto ligneo dorato eseguito nel 1844 da Antonio Manetti. La scena centrale rappresenta la Comunione di Santa Caterina. Ci sono molte figure tra le quali tanti draghi dappertutto. La guida con una certa commozione ci ha raccontato che l’autore non ha avuto una sorte felice; infatti il Manetti era capo mastro del Museo dell’Opera di Siena. Quando finì il suo incarico si mise in urto con il successore il quale gli bloccò qualsiasi committenza costringendolo a lavorare in un mobilificio a Livorno. Morì poverissimo.

Infine quattro ‘staggioli’ (porta ceri) processionali e dei festoni in legno che venivano messi fuori dalla Chiesa in occasione delle festività.

Finita la visita nell’Oratorio scendendo le scale siamo andati nel Museo della Contrada dove si trova la Sala delle Vittorie con tutti i drappelloni vinti dalla Contrada del Drago e dove ci aspettava un’altra guida, Maurizio, il quale ci ha raccontato che il palio ‘alla tonda’ così come viene corso oggi a Siena in Piazza del Campo risale al ‘600.

Il Palio, inteso come semplice corsa di cavalli, veniva corso anche in altre città durante il Medioevo e così anche a Siena ogni anno il 15 agosto in coincidenza con la festa della Repubblica si correva un Palio più paragonabile ad una corsa ippica alla quale partecipavano tra l’altro solo i nobili e non le Contrade con un percorso ‘alla lunga’ e cioè rettilineo da Porta Romana al Duomo.

Nel ‘600 le Contrade cominciarono a organizzare un Palio annuale alla tonda dedicato alla Visitazione di Maria quindi da correre il 2 di luglio e questo perché in questo modo tutti avrebbero potuto seguire la corsa dall’inizio alla fine. Chi vinceva questo Palio organizzava a proprie spese un Palio per il 16 agosto per festeggiare la vittoria riportata a luglio, fermo restando il Palio istituzionale del 15 di agosto. Dall’800 in poi il Comune si accollò le spese anche del Palio del 16 agosto.

Per quanto riguarda l’iconografia dei drappelloni all’inizio e fino a tutto l’800 era sempre uguale; infatti ritroviamo le stesse figure, la Madonna, gli stemmi dei tre deputati della festa e i simboli delle contrada quasi fossero stati fatti con lo stampino. Il primo Palio del ‘900 determinò un cambio di rotta nello stile; si vedono infatti i primi drappelloni in stile liberty. All’inizio degli anni ’60 il Palio segue la pittura moderna.

Tra i drappelloni presenti nella Sala una attenzione particolare merita quello straordinario corso il 20 agosto 1945 per celebrare la fine della seconda guerra mondiale e chiamato Palio della Pace. In realtà tutt’altro che in un clima di ‘pace’ arrivò la vittoria per il Drago in quanto il Bruco, a digiuno di vittoria da 33 anni, oltre a poter contare su un buon cavallo e un buon fantino era riuscito a ‘comprare’ la Piazza per assicurarsi la vittoria. Fu una mossa un po’ concitata in cui per ben due volte la Tartuca era partita per prima ed il mossiere aveva invalidato la partenza provocando un forte malcontento in questa contrada tanto da portarla a decidere di abbandonare la corsa. Rimasero quindi in nove. Quando la partenza fu finalmente valida il Bruco fu subito in testa ma tra tutte le contrade il Drago non rispettò i patti e alla fine vinse il Palio ma il tempo dei festeggiamenti durò poco perché la rabbia dei brucaioli esplose in un attimo travolgendo anche il drappellone che fu spezzato in mille pezzi. Ci volle del tempo perché la calma tornasse. Il Bruco tra l’altro dovette far ridipingere a sue spese il drappellone e, ed è qui la particolarità di questo Palio, l’autore lo rifece uguale all’originale ad eccezione di una piccola ma significativa variante: in bocca al drago disegnò un piccolo bruco…

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: il Bruco

Altro nipote, fratello di quello a cui ho fatto cenno in un precedente post, altra contrada: il Bruco.

Ebbene si, a Siena succede anche questo che in una famiglia non tutti appartengano alla stessa contrada.

Anche a Borgo Grondaie succede, nel senso che i tre fratelli proprietari dell’albergo sono di tre diverse contrade: Roberto è dell’Onda, Dino è della Tartuca e Marcello è della Torre!

L’Oratorio della Contrada del Bruco intitolata al Santissimo Nome di Gesù colpisce subito per la sua posizioni quasi ad incastro tra le case degli abitanti di quella che è il cuore della Contrada e cioè Via del Comune.

L’Oratorio fu costruito a metà del ‘600 per volontà degli stessi contradaioli i quali fino a quel momento, come la maggior parte delle Contrade, avevano usufruito dell’ospitalità di altre Chiese per i loro raduni.

Le risorse finanziarie non erano floride all’epoca per cui i contradaioli chiesero aiuto alle consorelle e, tra queste, dell’Oca si ha testimonianza scritta di un dono significativo. Si legge infatti che da Fontebranda partì verso il territorio della contrada del Bruco un corteo di 81 asini carichi di mattoni con a capo un’oca viva in modo che fosse facilmente riconoscibile il mittente di tale dono. Negli anni, ci ha raccontato la guida, si è persa questa alleanza.

L’interno dell’Oratorio è semplice ma molto dignitoso anche perché custodisce l’opera più antica e di valore presente in un oratorio di contrada e cioè la Madonna della Disciplina Maggiore eseguita dal pittore senese Luca di Tommé nel 1370 e donata alla Contrada dalla famiglia Pacciani, del Bruco, a fine del ‘600.

Il dipinto è particolarmente caro alla contrada del Bruco perché l’anno in cui fu eseguita, il 1370, è legato ad un evento storico di quell’epoca e cioè alla rivolta cappeggiata da Barbicone da parte dei lavoratori del bruco per motivi, diremo oggi, sindacali. Questi fecero delle richieste al Governo per avere dei benefici ma il Governo non fece loro alcuna concessione. I sobillatori furono quindi incarcerati ma durante la notte vennero liberati e Barbicone buttò giù da una delle finestre che affaccia su Piazza del Mercato uno dei governanti. Scene di queste sommossa sono state riportate in un affresco presente nel museo della Contrada, compresa la scena di Barbicone che butta giù dalla finestra uno dei governanti ma… sicuramente per dare maggiore autorevolezza alla scena… è stata rappresentata Piazza del Campo al di là della finestra e non Piazza del Mercato!

Ancora a proposito della Madonna la guida ci ha raccontato che un mese fa, nonostante i brucaioli siano stati criticati da molti per questa decisione un po’ sventata considerato il valore dell’opera, la tavola è stata portata da Papa Benedetto XVI affinché la benedisse. E’ successo che il Papa ha pensato per un attimo che fosse un dono per lui…

Ai lati dell’altare ci sono delle bandiere dell’800 e la guida ci ha fatto notare come il colore azzurro che caratterizza le bandiere di oggi in queste più antiche sia invece rappresentato da un celeste molto chiaro; questo perché nei secoli le sfumature dei colori sono cambiate.

Altre opere presenti nell’Oratorio ed eseguite nella seconda metà del ‘700:

- San Bernardino, di Giuseppe Nasini

- Santa Caterina, di Giuseppe Nasini

- Circoncisione di Gesù, di Dionisio Montorselli

- Adorazione dei Magi, di Dionisio Montorselli

Quest’ultimo autore ha eseguito molte tele per i diversi Oratori di Contrada a Siena. Il suo stile non è originale ma dimostra una conoscenza approfondita dei suoi colleghi del passato come possiamo notare nel particolare dei piedi della figura che è in primo piano nella Circoncisione di Gesù, chiaro richiamo ad un soggetto simile nella Madonna dei Pellegrini del Caravaggio che si trova nella Chiesa di Sant’Agostino a Roma (oggi per la verità si trova in mostra nella Galleria Borghese) oppure nella torsione del corpo di forte richiamo michelangiolesco di altra figura presente nello stesso quadro.

Nella volta centrale è raffigurato il Trionfo dello Spirito Santo di anonimo senese del ‘700.

L’organo è stato acquistato dalla Contrada del Drago nel ‘600.

La guida ci ha ricordato che durante i giorni del Palio il cavallo andato in sorte alla Contrada viene portato all’interno dell’Oratorio, di fronte all’altare (per l’occasione viene messa una piattaforma di gomma per terra in modo che il cavallo non scivoli) dove ad attenderlo c’è il Correttore (il sacerdote della Contrada) per la benedizione. Ci sono una serie di rituali fissi che accompagnano questo momento tra i quali l’accostamento alla guancia del cavallo per mano del Correttore della reliquia custodita in Sagrestia e la frase di incitamento che questi rivolge proprio al cavallo ‘Vai, e torna vincitore!’.

Ai lati dell’altare ci sono due colonne stuccate a effetto tali da sembrare di marmo senese anche se così non è… troppo costoso…

Dall’Oratorio la guida ci ha portato nella Sagrestia dove ci ha fatto notare il reliquiario di cui ho accennato prima (mi hanno colpito molto tutti i sigilli di cera lacca nella parte posteriore). All’interno di una vetrina sono custoditi dei paramenti sacri due dei quali molto particolari. Entrambi sono stati realizzati nel ‘700: uno, quello bianco, dalle suore con la tecnica della crettatura cioè inamidando la stoffa per poi pizzicarla con le dita in modo da creare l’effetto pieghettato e l’altro di velluto verde di molto pregio. Sempre in Sagrestia si trova un drappo da processione dell’800 realizzato dal gruppo donne della Contrada.

Dalla Sagrestia ci siamo spostati nella Stanza dei Ricordi e di Memorie dove sono esposti i regali ricevuti da altre contrade tra cui un tamburo ricevuto in dono dalla contrada dell’Istrice per la vittoria del 1996 arrivata dopo 41 anni di digiuno.

Da qui siamo andati nel Museo della Contrada e devo dire che io, come anche tutte le persone che stavano facendo la visita insieme a me, siamo rimasti molto colpiti dalla disposizione attenta e funzionale di ogni oggetto. Sembrava di essere in un Museo di quelli prestigiosi nel senso che ogni cosa è custodita all’interno di teche a incasso con illuminazione dedicata in modo da valorizzare in maniera ottimale il proprio contenuto. Anche la scala leggermente a spirale che collega i diversi piani del Museo conferisce un che di avanguardia agli ambienti. Davvero complimenti a chi ha progettato il tutto.

Nel piano superiore si trovano vari arredi sacri sui quali spicca l’incisione di un piccolo bruco ad indicare che quegli oggetti erano stati commissionati appositamente per questo Oratorio e quindi non sarebbero potuti essere esposti in altri luoghi; diversi esemplari di monture appartenenti a periodi diversi (come ho già avuto occasione di dire in un altro post le monture più antiche esistenti risalgono al 1839 dopo di ché sono state rinnovate nel 1904, 1928, 1955, 1981 e 2000). La cosa che colpisce guardando le monture di epoche diverse è come sia aumentata progressivamente l’altezza media delle persone. Insieme ad alcune monture ci sono anche delle spennacchiere (la spennacchiera è un oggetto fatto di stoffa con i colori della Contrada che viene posto sulla fronte del cavallo. In teoria se un cavallo scosso, cioè senza fantino perché magari questi è caduto durante la corsa, arriva al traguardo senza spennacchiera non vince perché non è riconoscibile visivamente la contrada per la quale ha corso. Non è mai successo e se dovesse succedere la nostra guida ci ha fatto capire che sarebbe improbabile negare la vittoria anche perché oggi ci sono tanti altri segni di riconoscimento che determinano l’appartenenza di un cavallo alla contrada a cui è andato in sorte. Lo specchietto di cui è dotata ogni spennacchiera ha la funzione di respingere la sfortuna nel caso in cui questa provi ad avvicinarsi al cavallo) e una teca che contiene un quadretto votivo rappresentante la caduta di Piaggina, un vecchio fantino settantenne che il 2 luglio del 1826 correva per la contrada del Bruco e fu sbalzato da cavallo alla partenza e nella caduta ruppe anche il morso della briglia; ebbe però prontezza di riflessi nello sfilarsi un laccio dalla scarpa e metterla come morso nella bocca del cavallo in modo da poterlo gestire. Ed infatti riuscì a portare la vittoria in Contrada. Accanto a questa tavoletta votiva sono custoditi il morso del cavallo e, anche se estraneo a questa vicenda, una specie di salvadanaio con i colori della contrada con il quale il fantino vittorioso passava a riscuotere i soldi per il suo operato. Oggi si fa in tutt’altro modo..

La visita si è conclusa nel piano inferiore dove si trova la Sala delle Vittorie. Qui occupano un posto d’onore i drappelloni delle ultime quattro vittorie riportate in tempi ravvicinati dal Bruco dopo quel lungo digiuno dal 1955 al 1996. Rivedo con piacere il drappellone del 1996 ispirato alla pop art, quello del 2003, quello del 2005 e quello del 2008. Molto particolare e prezioso quello del 2005 eseguito dalla senese Rita Petti e dedicato a a Pio II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini 1405-1464, senese di nobili origini) per il quale l’autrice ha utilizzato una pasta, le cui componenti sono note soltanto a lei, per dare maggiore realismo alle parti dorate e argentate.

La guida ci ha spiegato che la vittoria del 1996 è stata vissuta come una liberazione e accompagnata dai comportamenti più svariati di eccitazione da parte dei contradaioli, quello del 2003 è stato vissuto come una conferma del fatto che si era ricominciato per davvero a vincere, quelli del 2005 e 2008 sono stati vissuti come forse i contradaioli vorrebbero viverli sempre e cioè con la tranquillità di dire: quest’anno ha vinto il Palio tale contrada, l’anno prossimo o quello dopo si rivincerà noi!

Infine, in questa sala è custodito un crocifisso di scuola duccesca che inizialmente era visibile nella Porta d’Ovile poi è successo che durante la seconda guerra mondiale i brucaioli lo portarono dentro al loro museo per evitare che venisse distrutto e da allora non è stato più riposizionato all’esterno. E’ stato anche restaurato. La proprietà è del Comune e quindi in qualsiasi momento potrebbe richiederlo indietro ma finché non succede è preziosamente custodito qui.

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: la Selva

L’Oratorio della Contrada della Selva fu costruito tra il 1493 ed il 1525. E’ dedicato a San Sebastiano protettore dei tessitori.

Prima di acquisire la proprietà definitiva di questa Chiesa nel 1818, la Contrada della Selva ha dovuto officiare in altri luoghi e cioè nella Chiesa della Compagnia di San Giovanni sotto il Duomo, nella Pieve di San Giovanni al Duomo, nella Chiesa di San Desiderio e, per ultimo, nella Chiesa di San Niccolò al Sasso in quanto il terremoto del 1789 aveva danneggiato la Chiesa di San Desiderio. Questi spostamenti sono stati causati anche da problematiche relative a diritti vantati dalla contrada della Pantera, confinante a loro.

L’impianto dell’Oratorio è a croce greca con affreschi di autori senesi del ‘600.

Sull’altare di sinistra troviamo una Crocifissione di Rutilio Manetti eseguita nel 1630 con un crocifisso ligneo policromo applicato.

Sull’altare di destra una Epifania del 1640 di Astolfo Petrazzi.

Sull’altare maggiore un bassorilievo in terracotta di Madonna con Figlio attribuita a Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1474) e venerata dai contradaioli come Madonna della Selva.

Nel Museo ci sono due icone molto pregiate del ‘400: una è di Benvenuto di Giovanni e l’altra di Guidoccio Cozzarelli. Tra gli arredi sacri ci sono anche diverse statue di Santi e siccome sono stata sempre affascinata dall'iconografia ed iconologia nell'arte mi sono soffermata un attimo con Margherita, archivista della Contrada e mia guida durante la visita, a cercare di indovinare a quali Santi corrispondessero quelle statue.

Continuando la visita nella Sala delle Vittorie ho fatto un incontro casuale ma piacevole; ho conosciuto cioè il Priore (6) della Contrada.

Con un certo orgoglio Margherita mi ha mostrato tutti i Palii vinti richiamando la mi attenzione su quello del 2 luglio del 1978 sul quale è inserita una ampolla con della terra di Piazza del Campo.

Questa Contrada ha avuto un periodo di lungo digiuno di vittorie dal 1919 al 1953. Dopo di ché ha cominciato a vincere spesso. L’ultima volta risale ad agosto del 2006.

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: la Tartuca

L’Oratorio della Contrada della Tartuca fu costruito dal 1682 al 1685 con il lavoro gratuito dei contradaioli stessi. Fino a quel momento infatti avevano utilizzato la Chiesa di Sant’Ansano in Castelvecchio, lì vicino.

L’Oratorio è piccolo ma molto ricco ed è dedicato a Sant’Antonio da Padova.

Sul pavimento appena si entra è visibile un graffito del 1891 realizzato da Leopoldo Maccari con rappresentato Sant’Antonio che guarisce la gamba di un giovane che se l’era tagliata pentito di aver colpito la madre.

Davanti all’altare campeggia il drappellone vinto quest’anno a luglio.

Tutto il complesso dei locali della Contrada è in fase di riorganizzazione. Comunque tra i Palii visibili ce ne sono tre che colpiscono perché realizzati durante gli anni della seconda guerra mondiale, quello del 1930 e quelli del cappotto del 1933, e che quindi hanno dipinti sulla tela anche il fascio littorio simbolo del fascismo. Fa un pò impressione ma fa parte della Storia.

Un drappellone molto particolare è quello del 2 luglio 1972 che è fatto da tante piastrelle di rame sbalzato.

Altro Palio singolare è quello vinto il 16 agosto del 2002 e realizzato dal pittore Botero inconfondibile per le sue proporzioni molto ‘in carne’ del corpo umano.

E’ del 1970 la regola secondo la quale il Drappellone del Palio di Luglio viene affidato ad un artista senese e quello di Agosto ad un artista nazionale o internazionale.

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: la Lupa

Non potevo non visitare la Contrada della Lupa, uno dei miei nipoti apartiene a questa contrada e quindi...

L’inizio della costruzione dell’Oratorio della Contrada della Lupa risale al 1511 quando era di proprietà della Compagnia Laicale di San Rocco, protettore degli appestati.

Dal 1600 circa la Contrada della Lupa utilizzò questa chiesa come sua sede che solo 1786 divenne di sua proprietà dopo che la Compagnia Laicale era stata soppressa dalle Leggi Leopoldine.

L'Oratorio è dedicato quindi a San Rocco e a San Giobbe. Per molto tempo fu abbastanza spoglio per mancanza di soldi. Dopo il Concilio di Trento però le Chiese si sentirono quasi costrette ad arricchire i loro luoghi di culto con dipinti e allora, per risparmiare, la Contrada della Lupa commissionò i dipinti a giovani autori senesi del ‘600, quasi tutti figli d’arte.

L’Oratorio della Lupa svolge quasi funzione di Parrocchia nel suo territorio; infatti ogni domenica elle 8.00 viene celebrata la Messa a cui possono partecipare tutti.

All’interno dell’Oratorio c’è un Organo di dimensioni ridotte costruito nel 1882 da Nicomede Agati. La guida mi ha detto che esistono degli spartiti di musica scritta appositamente per gli organi degli Oratori di Contrada.

Nella Sala Capitolare dell’Oratorio vi è un ciclo di affreschi sulla vita di San Rocco realizzato da Rutilio Manetti, autore senese del ‘600 di quelli più noti. Come ogni ambiente della Contrada esso è carico di storia e di arte ma viene vissuto dalla quotidianità della Contrada stessa. Ad esempio in questa Sala vengono allestiti eventi vari come concerti, presentazione di libri, etc; ha luogo anche la Vestizione delle Comparse per il corteo storico del Palio.

Nella Sala del Seggio sono custodite due Bandiere storiche l’ultima delle quali in ordine di tempo a dir la verità non piacque molto ai lupaioli essendo questi molto legati alla iconografia tradizionale.

Le bandiere come anche le monture più antiche risalgono al 1904. Nel 1928 furono rifatte le Monture e le Bandiere di tutte le Contrade seguendo un criterio preciso in quanto fino a questo momento ogni Contrada aveva fatto un po’ a modo suo.

Sempre in questo anno venne rifatto anche il Carroccio, il carro che chiude il corteo storico e sul quale viene issato il Palio. Il carroccio del 1928 è attualmente visibile all’interno del Museo Santa Maria della Scala.

Nel 1955 furono nuovamente rifatte Monture e Bandiere poi nel 1981 e l'ultima volta nel 2000.

E’ interessante notare nelle Monture lo stile che cambia e che rispecchia quello della moda contemporanea.

In questa Sala è presente un dipinto molto noto e importante di Ventura Salimbeni realizzato nel 1603 e che ha come soggetto San Rocco che mostra le piaghe alla Madonna.

Sempre in questa Sala è presente uno Stendardo color bordeaux di quando i lupaioli andarono in pellegrinaggio a Caprera in onore di Giuseppe Garibaldi il quale aveva portato loro fortuna nel 1867 quando il Palio fu anticipato al 15 agosto proprio per permettere a Garibaldi di presenziarlo e la Lupa lo vinse.

In quell’occasione Garibaldi lasciò una sua foto con dedica al fantino vittorioso. Il drappellone in oggetto è visibile nella Sala delle Vittorie dove ha una collocazione d’onore all’interno di una teca di legno. Accanto ad esso è visibile la foto con la dedica di Garibaldi.

Nella Sala delle Monture è possibile vedere le Monture degli anni passati e quelle utilizzate attualmente e devo dire che sono davvero molto belle. L’elmo del duce, realizzato dallo scultore senese Olla, merita uno sguardo particolare.

Qui la guida mi ha spiegato anche come mai nel simbolo della Contrada della Lupa c’è una corona sopra alla testa della lupa: è un omaggio alla lupa di Roma imperiale.

La lupa senese infatti è diversa da quella romana in quanto la testa guarda davanti e non di lato.

Dalla Sala delle Monture finalmente si arriva alla Sala delle Vittorie dove la mia attenzione è stata portata nei confronti del Palio vinto il 2 luglio 1945, anno della fine della seconda guerra mondiale, e questo perché in basso a destra c’è un drago sanguinante perché colpito da un pugnale e sulle ali sono state disegnate le svastiche naziste. Al centro del drappellone le bandiere dei cinque paesi alleati. Destò molto scalpore ovviamente questo drappellone perché una delle Contrade di Siena è denominata proprio Drago ma il drago era il simbolo del nazismo e in questo modo l'autore aveva voluto sottolineare la sconfitta del nazismo.

A proposito del periodo storico la guida mi ha spiegato che il Palio non è mai stato interrotto per alcuna ragione tranne che dal 1940 al 1944.

Un altro Palio degno di nota è quello straordinario corso il 18 agosto del 1907 in quanto è stato l’ultimo Palio in cui i barberi (i cavalli che corrono) erano tutti scossi, cioè senza fantino e per incitarli alla corsa venivano messe addosso ai cavalli delle perette, una di queste è posizionata accanto al drappellone. Oggi non sarebbe più possibile una cosa del genere.

L’ultimo Palio vinto dalla Lupa risale al 1989. Me lo ricordo bene perché è stato il primo anno da quando ero a Siena che ho seguito tutte le fasi del Palio.

Mi ricordo anche che mi trovai quasi in mezzo ad una ‘scazzottata’ tra i contradaioli della Lupa e quelli della loro contrada rivale, l’Istrice, perché nessuna delle due voleva dare la precedenza all’altra per entrare in Piazza del Campo con il cavallo.

In questa Sala è conservata anche la Colonna con la lupa romana che era stata innalzata nel 1548 di fronte all’Oratorio e che è stata sostituita nel 1966 da una nuova effigie donata dal Comune di Roma.

Troviamo anche un importante documento del 1698 e cioè il manoscritto dei ‘Capitolo et ordini della Contrada’: fino a questo momento veniva tramandato tutto oralmente.

Una scultura a forma di Leone è presente in Sala; esso si trovava nella Fonte Nuova di Ovile e da esso scorreva l’acqua. Ironia della sorte si tratta di un ‘leone’, animale non proprio caro alla Lupa perché ricorda il nome della società della sua contrada rivale…

L’ultima Sala è quella del Consiglio dove sono esposti anche i masgalani. Mi è piaciuto molto quello eseguito dallo scultore senese Olla per il masgalano del 1998.

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: l'Onda

L’Oratorio della Contrada dell'Onda è dedicato a San Giuseppe perché prima di diventare di proprietà dell’Onda nel 1787, esso apparteneva alla Compagnia dei Legnaioli della zona.

La sua costruzione va dal 1522 al 1550.

Prima gli 'ondaioli' officiavano nella Chiesa della Visitazione di Maria Santissima, annessa alla parrocchia di San Salvatore.

L’impianto dell'Oratorio è a croce greca con una cupola molto bella a forma di ombrello.

L’ingresso è chiuso da una grande cancellata lignea.

Nel Museo è presente la gipsoteca di Giovanni Dupré, scultore senese dell’800 nato in questo rione.

Come in ogni Contrada anche qui i contradaioli caduti in guerra vengono ricordati con una targa. In più, qui nell’Onda, all’interno del Museo è presente una Cappella in loro onore con la bellissima scultura ‘Il dolore’ di Amalia Dupré, figlia di Giovanni.

Tra i drappelloni vinti presenti nella Sala delle Vittorie mi ha colpito molto quello del 1980 dedicato a San Bernardino da Siena per i suoi colori vivaci e lo stile un po’ naif. A proposito di questo drappellone mi ha raccontato la guida che esso è stato oggetto di una causa giudiziaria tra la Contrada e l’autore poiché quest’ultimo aveva preteso i diritti di autore per la riproduzione dell’opera sulla carta stampata.

Per ogni Vittoria infatti le Contrade pubblicano il cosiddetto Numero Unico con foto, commenti e articoli vari.

L’Onda perse la causa ma da quell’anno in poi il Sindaco introdusse una norme in base alla quale gli autori dei drappelloni non avrebbero potuto vantare alcun diritto una volta consegnata al Comune la loro opera. Il drappellone del 1995, ultimo Palio vinto dalla Contrada, è dedicato al Miracolo di Provenzano, la Madonna alla quale è dedicato il Palio di Luglio.

Ricordo ancora la bellissima festa della Vittoria.

L’Onda, come ogni Contrada, disponde di un prorpio Archivio; ma ciò che distingue l'archivio dell'Onda da quelli delle altre Contrade è che esso ha la documentazione più antica e cioè dal 1524 tant'è che a volte addirittura il Comune di Siena chiede di poterlo consultare.

5: un episodio avvenuto durante l'occupazione fiorentina e spagnola della città. Verso la fine del Cinquecento una famosa Pietà conservata in un tabernacolo nel rione dove aveva abitato Provenzano Salvani, che si diceva essere stata posta nella sua collocazione da Santa Caterina tre secoli prima, fu oltraggiata da un soldato spagnolo. Forse in preda all'alcool, egli sparò alla statua, rimanendo ucciso dall'esplosione del suo stesso archibugio. Era il 2 luglio e, per commemorare il miracolo fatto dalla Vergine protettrice di Siena contro gli occupanti, i cittadini cominciarono di anno in anno a celebrare con sempre maggiore sfarzo l'anniversario. Tra le varie celebrazioni, fu naturale inserire una corsa del Palio. Nel 1611 fu anche innalzata la Basilica di Provenzano che custodisce ancora oggi quello che resta dell'immagine sacra oltraggiata, la Madonna di Provenzano.

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: la Torre

L’Oratorio della Contrada della Torre fu costruito a partire dal 1531 come ringraziamento alla Vergine Immacolata sotto la cui protezione era stata combattuta e vinta nel 1526 la battaglia di Porta Camollia contro le truppe fiorentine e pontificie. In prima linea erano schierati molti appartenenti alla contrada della Torre. A ricordo di tale vittoria, riportata nel giorno dedicato ai Santi Giacomo e Cristoforo, la Repubblica senese decise di edificare in Salicotto una chiesa intitolata ai due Santi, dietro sollecitazione degli stessi abitanti del rione i quali contribuirono effettivamente alla realizzazione del progetto. I lavori furono terminati nel 1536, come confermato da una lapide visibile all’interno dell’oratorio, in fondo alla parete di sinistra, sulla quale si legge:

IM(maculate) MAR(iae) OB VIC(toriam) 1526. 1536 F(undamenta) P(osuere)
‘A Maria immacolata, a motivo della vittoria del 1526. Realizzato nel 1536.’.

La struttura dell’Oratorio ha subito nel tempo importanti lavori di ampliamento e ristrutturazione fino al 1702.

Nell’Oratorio ci sono molti dipinti. La guida, che è anche l’archivista della contrada, ha richiamato la mia attenzione sulle seguenti opere:

- altare laterale a destra: dipinto di Giovanni di Lorenzo che raffigura la Beata Vergine immacolata fra i Santi Giacomo e Cristoforo (1545). L’autore, contradaiolo della Torre, aveva eseguito lo stesso soggetto sullo stendardo portato dai soldati senesi nella battaglia del 1526. Lo stesso soggetto l’autore aveva già eseguito per la Chiesa di San Martino dove è tuttora visibile, entrando a sinistra.

- altare maggiore: tela raffigurante il Martirio di San Giacomo eseguita nel 1605 da Rutilio Manetti. I colori della tavolozza del Manetti in questa tela sono molto vivaci contrariamente a come siamo abituati a vederli in altri suoi dipinti. Infatti nella parete di destra del presbiterio c’è un’altra tela del Manetti raffigurante la Crocifissione ed eseguita nel 1625 di stile più caravaggesco e non a caso; infatti in quegli anni si era recato a Roma e aveva conosciuto Caravaggio subendone l’influenza.

Nel Museo della Contrada si possono ammirare nelle diverse Sale le Monture che si sono susseguite nel corso dei secoli la cui ispirazione è facilmente riconoscibile (moda spagnola, gusto rinascimentale, gusto ottocentesco), arredi e paramenti sacri, l’antica campana dell’oratorio realizzata, secondo la tradizione, fondendo i pezzi di artiglieria conquistata ai fiorentini nella vittoriosa battaglia di Porta Camollia del 1526, una tela del Sodoma, L’andata al Calvario, del 1546, un tratto delle mura cittadine d’inizio Duecento ed infine la Sala delle Vittorie dove si possono ammirare i quattro masgalani (1)vinti dalla Torre nel seicento e nel settecento ed i Palii (2) vinti.

Curiosità:

- il Palio più antico presente nella sala è quello relativo al Palio straordinario vinto il 14 maggio del 1767 in onore del granduca Pietro Leopoldo, che nel 1795 aveva preso possesso della Toscana.

- ci sono due coppie di Palii accostati uno accanto all’altro in maniera evidente e sono quelli vinti a luglio e ad agosto del 1787 e quelli vinti a luglio e ad agosto del 1896. Quando una contrada vince entrambi i palii si dice che ha fatto ‘cappotto’.

- il 14 maggio 1809 la Torre vince la carriera straordinaria (3) in onore di Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, sorella dell’imperatore Bonaparte, governatrice di Toscana. Nel drappellone viene raffigurata per la prima e unica volta la Madonna delle Grazie (4) venerata nel Duomo di Siena. Nella storia del Palio solo due volte si è corso un Palio straordinario il 14 maggio: nel 1767 e nel 1809. Entrambe le volte lo ha vinto la Torre.

- Nel 1961 la Torre vince il Palio di Agosto dopo di ché inizierà un lungo digiuno di vittorie che culminerà…

- … il 16 agosto 2005 quando il fantino Luigi Bruschelli, detto Trecciolino, vince per la Torre con il cavallo Berio. Quest’anno saranno il fantino ed il cavallo a fare cappotto; infatti a luglio lo stesso fantino, Trecciolino, con lo stesso cavallo, Berio, aveva portato la vittoria nella contrada del Bruco.

Io c’ero in Piazza quando ha vinto la Torre. Mi ricordo che impiegai un’ora per raggiungere il Duomo per assistere al Te Deum di ringraziamento dei contradaioli tale era la fiumana di gente che andava nella stessa direzione.

Commovente fu ascoltare i racconti delle persone che mi circondavano: c’erano persone della mia età che non avevano mai visto vincere il Palio, altri che quando avevano vinto l’ultimo Palio erano nel pieno della loro gioventù e ora si ritrovavano con qualche capello bianco, qualche ruga, figli e nipoti.

E' stata proprio una grande festa tranne che per… l’Oca e l’Onda… le contrade rivali della Torre !

1: il masgalano dallo spagnolo ‘mas galan’ che vuol dire ‘più elegante’, è un premio che viene assegnato alla contrada che nel corso di entrambe le passeggiate storiche di luglio ed agosto si distingue per eleganza, dignità di portamento e coordinazione.

2: a Siena il Palio si corre due volte l’anno: il 2 luglio ed il 16 agosto. In ciascun Palio corrono 10 delle 17 contrade. Sette corrono di diritto e sono quelle che non hanno corso nella stessa data dell’anno precedente. Le altre tre vengono sorteggiate tra le 10 rimanenti. Il sorteggio avviene in due momenti ben conosciuti dai senesi: l’ultima domenica di maggio per il palio di luglio, la domenica successiva al palio di luglio per quello di Agosto. Nei Palii straordinari vengono sorteggiate tutte e 10 le contrade.

3: il Palio straordinario in genere viene corso a settembre per commemorare un evento di risonanza notevole.

4: di solito nel Palio viene raffigurata la Madonna di Provenzano per quello di luglio, la Madonna Assunta per quello di agosto.

Musei e Oratori di Contrada: Introduzione

Fino a Maggio 2010 ogni sabato mattina le Contrade di Siena, a turno, apriranno i loro Musei ed Oratori al pubblico su prenotazione da fare telefonicamente al numero 0577-292614 oppure 0577-292615 attivo dal lunedì al venerdì dalle ore 9:30 alle ore 12:30.

Considerate che si riescono a visitarne massimo tre per volta.

Dopo tale data sarà possibile visitare gli oratori fissando un appuntamento direttamente con la contrada attraverso il loro sito web.

Come appassionata di storia dell’arte e di Siena sto approfittando anch’io di questa occasione davvero unica per visitare questi piccoli tesori nascosti ma così vissuti dal popolo di ogni contrada.

Forse un po’ troppo frettolosamente a volte si dice che i senesi sono chiusi, che il Palio i senesi lo corrono per sé e che quasi quasi i turisti danno loro fastidio.

Visitando le Contrade ci si rende conto del contrario. Ogni volta infatti vengo colpita dalla disponibilità e passione con la quale le guide, che sono poi i contradaioli stessi, mi fanno notare le opere di pregio presenti nelle loro Contrade e, ciò che mi entusiasma molto, le curiosità su alcuni drappelloni vinti.

In questa serie di post intitolati ‘Musei e Oratori di Contrada’ condividerò con voi le cose che mi rimangono impresse via via che visito le Contrade.

Hidden places of Siena: Church and Museum of Contrada della Torre

All the 17 Contrade of Siena have their own Church and Museum. They are really little gems which worth a visit.

The Contrada della Torre opens theit Church and Museum every third Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

When I visited this Contrada I was really fascinated by what I saw and the passion with which our guide took us to the discovery of the treasures of his Contrada.

The Contrada della Torre is the only district that has a Church born with that destination and not as
an existing Church then converted into a chapel as it has happened to others districts and this also because in this area there were no other churches to borrow. There are a few notices only of an old church called San Giusto which was demolished to make a square that now corresponds to a parking lot.

The construction of the Church of the Contrada della Torre began in 1531 as a thanksgiving to the Immaculate Virgin under the protection of which was fought in 1526 and won the battle of Porta Camollia against Florentine and papal troops. At the forefront were deployed many people belonging to the Contrada della Torre.

To commemorate this victory, reported on the day dedicated to Saints James and Christopher, namely July 25, the Republic of Siena by instigation of the people of the Contrada della Torre decided to build a church dedicated to the two Saints in Salicotto. The work was completed in 1536, as confirmed by a plaque visible inside the church at the bottom of the left wall, on which we read IM (maculate) MAR (iae) OB VIC (toriam) 1526. 1536 F (undamenta) P (osuere): 'To Mary Immaculate, because of the victory of 1526. Made in 1536. '

The structure of the church has undergone major expansion and renovation work until 1702.

In the church there are many paintings. The guide drew our attention to the following masterpieces:

- altar on the right side: painting by Giovanni di Lorenzo, the Blessed Virgin Immaculate between St. James and Christopher (1545). The author, belonging to the Contrada della Torre, had run the same subject on the banner carried by soldiers in the battle of Siena 1526. Same model, same author had already been executed for the Church of San Martino where the canvas is still visible as one enters on the left.

- altar on the left side: painting by Aurelio Martelli, Madonna and Child, St. Anne and St. John (1700). The presence of St. Anne is in honor of the women of Contrada della Torre who always had a very active participation in the district. Having already chosen the Madonna, it was chosen the most important woman and saint immediately after her as patron of the women, who? the mother of the Madonna!

- main altar: a canvas depicting the Martyrdom of St. James performed in 1605 by Rutilio Manetti. The color palette of Manetti in this painting is very bright in contrast to how we're used to seeing them in his other paintings and as it witness the canvas that is on the right wall of the chancel depicting the Crucifixion and executed by the same Manetti in 1625. The style here is caravaggiesco and in fact in those years Rutilio had gone to Rome and had known Caravaggio conceded inevitably influence.

In the Museum of the Contrada della Torre you can admire in the various rooms the costumes worn throughout the centuries from appearing in the historic parade before each Palio and whose inspiration is easily recognizable (Spanish fashion, Renaissance, nineteenth-century taste), vestments, the ancient bell of the church built in the tradition by fusing pieces of artillery captured the Florentines in the victorious Battle of Porta Camollia of 1526, a painting of Sodoma, The way to Calvary, 1546, a stretch of the city walls start thirteenth and finally the Sala delle Vittorie (the room of the wins) where you can admire the four masgalani won by Contrada della Torre in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (the word 'Masgalano' comes from Spanish 'Más galán' which means 'more elegant', is a prize which is awarded each year to the district that during both historic parade in July and August is characterized by elegance, dignity of bearing and coordination) and Palios won (The Palio is the banner that the district winner will receive as prize. last century there was fixed the iconography of the Palio. It means that it cannot miss the figure of the Madonna (of Provenzano in that of July, Assunta in that of August), the symbols of the 17 districts, the symbols of the three thirds that has divided the city of Siena (Camollia, Città, and San Martino), the Balzana ( the shield half white and half black, symbol of Siena) and the Leone rampante (lion rampant, which represents the people of Siena). The banner for the Palio of July is entrusted to an Italian author, that of August to a foreign author. In 19 century it was not in this way. In fact the figure of Madonna was done with the stencil and it jumps to the eyes because it is always the same.)

Tips:

- the oldest Palio among those which we find in this room is the Palio straordinario won on May 14, 1767 in honor of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, who in 1795 had taken possession of Tuscany. The Palio extraordinary (ordinary ones are those that are run every year on 2 July and 16 August) is decided by the town council to honor the presence of important people in Siena or to celebrate important events in the city and not only in the city. On this occasion, all 10 districts are drawn by lot (for the Palios ordinary 7 districts run by law and are those that have not run the previous year, the other 3 are drawn on particular dates: the last Sunday in May for the Palio of July, the Sunday after the Palio of July to that of August. The last Palio straordinario was run on Sept. 9, 2000 to celebrate the new millennium).

- there are two pairs of Palios combined side by side: the two won in July and August of 1787 and the two won in July and August of 1896. When a district wins both Palios people say that they have done ‘cappotto’ (coat). Note the date of the Palio in August of 1896, namely: August 25. In fact the Palio of August 16 was moved to 25 of the same year for the transition to Siena VIII Corps.

- on May 14, 1809 the Contrada della Torre wins the extraordinary career in honor of Elisa Bonaparte, sister of Emperor Bonaparte, the governor of Tuscany. In the Palio we find for the first and only time the Madonna delle Grazie venerated in the Cathedral of Siena. In the history of the Palio we have had only two Palio straordinario on May 14: in 1767 and 1809. Both times it has won by the Contrada della Torre.

- on September 13, 1910, the Contrada della Torre won the Palio straordinario in honor of the French journalists gathered at a conference in Siena.

- in 1961 the Contrada della Torre wins the Palio of August and after that a long fast of victories starts...

- the fast culminates on August 16, 2005 when the jockey Luigi Bruschelli, said Trecciolino, wins for the Contrada della Torre with the horse Berio. This year the jockey and the horse make ‘cappotto’, because in July the same jockey, Trecciolino, with the same horse, Berio, had brought victory in the Contrada del Bruco (caterpillar).

I was in the main square when the Contrada della Torre won the Palio after 44 years. I remember that it took me an hour to reach the Cathedral to attend the Te Deum of thanksgiving of the district people, such was the flood of people going in the same direction. It was touching to hear the stories of the people around me: there were people old like me who had never seen their Contrada winning a Palio, other that where youth on 1961 and now they had some gray hair, some wrinkles, adults sons and daughters and maybe even grandchildrens. It was a big party ... except for the Contrada dell’Oca (goose) and Contrada dell’Onda (wave): the rival districts of the Contrada della Torre.

Each Contrada has also its own fountain where newborns are baptized each year during the festivities of their Saint patron.

The fountain of the Contrada della Torre was built in 1984 by the sculptor and ‘torraiolo’ (belonging to the Contrada delle Torre) Mauro Berrettini, who we know very well because he is the brother in law of one of the owners of Borgo Grondaie. Our favourites Restaurants in Siena and more

There are some our guests who arrive with very clear ideas on things to see in Siena, places for shopping and good restaurants. They usually bring with them a briefcase or travel notebook where they signed the main places of interest to visit and also the better places to eat according the opinion of important magazines or because they have some good reviews on .... guess? ... yes, you are right… on Tripadvisor.

I must say that I recognize myself in these customers because I like to plan in advance my travels. I would never discover that I lost something beautiful, distinctive and interesting after I left a place because I do not know if in the future I will be able to return there.

There are other guests who prefer a slow rhythm. They are the ones who decide to explore the city on foot to get an overview. They remind me the recent Woody Allen's movie 'Whatever works' when the player says that 'genius is one who has a huge world view'. Who knows? However, these guests love going deeper into things only when they impress their senses. It can be happen in front of a monument or a restaurant. So they make their choices moment by moment.

Other guests like going deeper into the customs of the places they visit; those who wish to attend the same bars and restaurants frequented by locals.

In any class you recognize yourself this post is dedicated to you.

I hope that our preferences will agree with your choices made in advance or at the moment.

Who want to live the Sienese life style will be satisfied immediately because these are the restaurants where I and my colleagues go usually.

Know that we do not ever recommend restaurants which we do not know.

Some tips before to complete my post:

- if you belong to those guests who love to plan all the details in advance and hate to waste time I really suggest you to book restaurants in advance so that you are sure they are not close for rest or for holiday. Please, remind also that in Siena restaurants are not open all the day. They accept reservations for lunch from 12.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. and for dinner from 7.30 p.m. until 9.30 p.m. Exceptions: in Summer the restaurants located in the main square Il Campo are open all the day. Among the restaurants I suggested the Compagnia dei Vinattieri is open till late in the evening for cold meals.

- ask the menu every time. It will save you from bad surprises when the bill will arrive.

- about the bill you will find there the cost of what you ate + the cover charge + service. By law only in the region of Lazio the restaurants cannot add this taxes so please do not think restaurants want to take advantage of tourists.

- about tip you are not obligated to give that. It is an optional in case you appreciated the food and the service and want to reward them. Waiters can accept tips only in cash so do not ask to charge on your credit card because it means tax evasion for the restaurants.

- there are some meat dishes that have their own particular cooking such as Fiorentina which is eaten cooked rare. Please do not get angry if the waiter is surprised when you ask, for example, a well cooked Fiorentina. Sienese restaurants are usually knowledgeable about cooking. Believe at what they say you about this matter. It can be happen also if you ask for a Pepsi Cola… Some dishes need their own drinks to exalt the taste.

- sometimes guests ask to us if their dresses are right for restaurant. There is no a restricted dress code for restaurants in Siena. Casual clothing will be perfect everywhere you go.

- almost all restaurants in Siena serve only Tuscan dishes. It is a shame, I know, specially if you are vegetarian, vegan, celiac or whatever else. Because of that I highly recommend you to contact restaurants in advance to check if it is possible to make some exceptions at the menu.

- time ago a guest of Borgo Grondaie told me that one of the restaurants where he went because of good reviews was for 'food enthusiastic people' according to him. I thought a lot about that and at the end I realized the maybe all Italians are ‘food enthusiastic’ because when we go out to eat we like to do a full meal (starter, first dish: pasta or soup, second dish: meat or fish, dessert), eat well, drink better, relax and talk with our friends. It does not matter the time we spend at restaurant. I wrote that thing to explain you that if service is not so fast in restaurants it could be because of that.

Now, I can only wish you have a great food experience in Siena!

Hidden places of Siena: TAVOLETTE di BICCHERNA Museum

There are some hidden gems in Siena which escape the mass tourism because they are less publicized. One of these is represented by the Tavolette di Biccherna preserved in the Archivio di Stato of the city. They are wooden boards painted with tempera or oil which served as covers of records belonging to the office of Biccherna which from the beginning of the Comune until the SEC. XVIII was the judiciary responsible for the administration of public revenues. These records were kept by the Camarlingo -the treasurer head office- who was a friar and the most important officials, the Provveditori (supervisors).

The oldest covers represent the Camarlingo intent on his work and the arms of the Provveditori.

The first wooden boards are simple and have no intention of being masterpieces. Subsequently, however, the paintings become more elaborate and rich and are commissioned to famous authors as Giovanni di Paolo, Sano di Pietro, Lorenzo di Pietro called il Vecchietta.

The layout of the boards remains, however, unchanged: at the top there is the painting and at the bottom the inscription bearing the date, the names of the main components of Biccherna, the arms of their families.

By the mid-fifteenth century, then, the covers of records were no longer painted but real paintings were commissioned to hang on the walls of the office when the Camarlingo and the Provveditori left definitively their assignment.

The subjects of the scenes represent leading events of the town, religious themes, episodes of contemporary politics.

Many of them have Our Lady as common subject. This is not so strange for us. The history of Siena is full of events which show the particular devotion of the Sienese to Our Lady.

See for example how nice is the follow board which represents Our Lady in the act of protecting Siena by earthquakes; made by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in 1467:

Or this other which represents The union of the classes and the offering of the keys of the city to the Madonna delle Grazie; made perhaps by Andrea di Niccolò in 1483. This board is important also because testifies the original location of the Maestà made by Duccio di Buoninsegna in 1311 in the Cathedral, that is to say, in the altar. Nowadays you can see this masterpiece at the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana.

As the Biccherna also another important financial judiciary of Siena called Gabella adopted the custom of painting the covers of some records. The Gabella was responsible for the outcome of the charges and was directed by a Camarlingo –a treasurer- and officers named Esecutori –executors.

One of the most popular boards is that made by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in 1344 which represents the Buon Governo - Good Government:

The most value works are those performed during the fifteenth century by painters such as

Sano di Pietro: Siena protected by Our Lady while the Camarlingo washes his hands, made in 1541

Benvenuto di Giovanni: The finances of the town in peace and in war made in 1468

Guidoccio Cozzarelli: Our Lady leads the Republic of Siena in calm waters; made in 1487

During the war of Siena (1555-1559), both the Biccherna and Gabella wanted to recall the most salient episodes of the conflict:

After the final annexation of Siena to the duchy of Florence (1559) many subjects were dedicated to the story of the Medici, to which the Sienese territory was granted in fief.

Here you find also some wooden boards which belong to other institutions and judiciaries of Siena among which the Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala and the Opera Metropolitana.

The Museum is located in Via Banchi di Sopra # 52 and it is open from Monday to Saturday at 9.30 - 10.30 and 11.30

There is no tour guide but there are some panels also in English which explain what you see.

Before to leave the Museum do not forget to stop at their balcony from where you will enjoy an amazing view onto the main square Il Campo.

The boards are expensive but they worth if you love to have a unique masterpiece in your home!

PIAZZA DUOMO

Cattedrale, dedicata all'Assunta, è stata compiuta nelle sue parti principali entro il 1215. Il progetto dei senesi era molto ambizioso tanto che volevano trasformare l’attuale cattedrale in una che superasse in dimensioni quella della storica rivale Firenze; la struttura esistente doveva diventare addirittura il transetto di quello da costruire; ma purtroppo la peste del 1348 decimò la popolazione ed i problemi diventarono ben altri per cui i senesi dovettero rinunciare ai sogni di grandezza. Segni di questo progetto sono comunque ancora visibili sulla destra dell’attuale Duomo in quanto i lavori erano già iniziati prima della peste.

- Pavimento, (visibile solo a settembre e ottobre): diviso in 56 riquadri, rappresenta la storia dei Tempi, dell'Uomo e della Salvezza. Eseguito fra il 1300 e il 1500 dai più insigni artisti senesi.

Navate laterali: rappresentazione delle Sibille, sacerdotesse dotate di virtù profetiche ispirate dal dio Apollo. La Chiesa occidentale, interpretandone i detti come anticipazioni della storia cristiana, le riconobbe come profetesse della venuta di Cristo, equivalenti pagane dei profeti dell'Antico Testamento. Ognuna di esse infatti ha un cartiglio che riporta l’anticipazione di un evento della vita di Gesù.

Navata centrale: la Sapienza, rappresentata da un saggio egiziano, è il primo supporto della Rivelazione ma il passaggio alla Rivelazione ha necessità di una dimensione temporale e spaziale. L'area centrale infatti è dedicata alle raffigurazioni che rappresentano il territorio e alla rappresentazione del potere temporale sottoposto alle umane vicende e alla superiorità della Sapienza su di esso.

Braccio sinistro della crociera, storie del mondo ebraico già toccato dalla rivelazione.

Esagono sotto la cupola: storie del profeta Elia.

Presbiterio: storie di Mosè

- Pulpito: rappresentazione di storie della vita di Gesù eseguite da Nicola Pisano dal 1266 al 1268.

- Madonna del Voto: scuola di Guido da Siena, seconda metà del sec. XIII.

- Libreria Piccolomini: affreschi sulla vita di Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini, futuro papa Pio II, eseguiti da Pinturicchio fra il 1502 e il 1507.

Museo dell'Opa: uno splendido panorama sulla città si può ammirare dal ‘facciatone’.

- Maestà: eseguita da Duccio di Buoninsegna dal 1308 al 1311. Opera caratterizzata da una grande raffinatezza di esecuzione. Le immagini sono aggraziate, accurate nella definizione dei particolari e costruite attraverso la linea ed il colore. Tenete a mente questa rappresentazione per stupirvi poi nel paragone con lo stesso soggetto eseguito da Simone Martini all’interno del Museo Civico.

Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala, oggi Museo: questa struttura, molto simile ad un labirinto, è stato ospedale fino agli anni ’90.

- Il Pellegrinaio: affreschi eseguiti da Domenico di Bartolo e dal Vecchietta dal 1440 al 1443. Le scene rappresentate raccontano le origini di questo ospedale nato nel medio evo come luogo di accoglienza dei pellegrini che transitavano per la città e come struttura in cui si compivano opere di carità.

PIAZZA DEL CAMPO

Il Campo, costruito durante il governo dei Nove (1287-1355: periodo di maggiore stabilità e splendore artistico della Repubblica di Siena) a forma di valva di conchiglia per sfruttare la pendenza naturale del terreno. In questa piazza due volte all’anno, il 2 di luglio ed il 16 agosto, si svolge la famosa corsa di cavalli detta Palio.

- Fonte Gaia: copia ottocentesca eseguita dallo scultore Tito Sarrocchi. L’originale, eseguita da Jacopo della Quercia nel 1409, è custodita all’interno del Museo Santa Maria della Scala.

- Torre del Mangia: finita di costruire nel 1341. E’ alta 87 metri e 102 fino al parafulmine. E’ detta così dal soprannome del campanaro Giovanni di Balduccio, meglio conosciuto come Mangiaguadagni o Mangia, incaricato dal Comune di battere le ore. In cima alla torre c’è una grande campana che i Senesi chiamano Campanone o Sunto perché dedicato alla Madonna Assunta in cielo.

- Palazzo Pubblico: iniziato dopo il 1250 e compiuto nel 1310.

- Cappella di Piazza: costruita nel 1352 per ricordare la pestilenza del 1348.

Museo Civico:

- Maestà: eseguita da Simone Martini nel 1315. Nonostante siano passati soltanto 4 anni dalla Maestà del Museo dell’OPA eseguita da Duccio di Boninsegna, contemporaneo quindi a Simone Martini, sembra sia passato un secolo tanta è la differenza nella rappresentazione dello stesso soggetto figurativo; infatti la Maestà di Simone Martini, a differenza di quella di Duccio, è caratterizzata dalla ricchezza decorativa delle immagini. Lo spirito cavalleresco e profano del tempo si riflette in questa scena nonostante il soggetto sia sacro: i Santi, vestiti con ricchi costumi d’epoca, circondano Maria che riceve doni dagli Angeli, inginocchiati ai lati del suo trono come paggi di fronte ad una dama.

- Guidoriccio da Fogliano, capitano dell'esercito senese: eseguito da Simone Martini nel 1328.

- allegoria del Buon Governo e del Cattivo Governo e loro effetti in città ed in campagna: eseguiti da Ambrogio Lorenzetti dal 1338 al 1340. Opere caratterizzate dall’attenzione per gli elementi di tipo naturalistico.

Italy trips: Delta Po - Borghetto - Verona

The reason of my trip this time was the concert of the Italian musician and composer Giovanni Allevi & the All Stars Orchestra held last September 1st at the Arena of Verona.

I'm a fan of this artist and I had the tickets since last May. So,why do not take the opportunity to visit new and places I have already seen but ever beautiful?

Adria was the base of my trip. It is a small and pretty town from where you can plan easily your visit of the Veneto region. I stayed…

at the Hotel Leon Bianco which is located in the center, next to the Theater. It is the second time here for me. The Hotel opened a year ago. It is modern and comfortable. I have assigned both times the room with a balcony overlooking the Canal. Breakfast is a bit low quality but ultimately the value for money is good.

I arrived in Adria on August 31st early in the afternoon and after a small rest I went with a friend of mine to Park of Delta Po.

We stopped at Barricata and we had a nice and long walk along the seashore. There were still some tourists althouth it was September. The beach is free, there are some Bars where you can have also small meals and also rent beach umbrellas, deck chairs and sun beds. Nearby there is a holiday village from where you can reach the beach on foot, it is called Villaggio Barricata.

From Barricata we went to see the Sacca(=lagoon) of Scardovari: beautiful and full of 'trabucchi', the houses of fishermen.

In the evening we came back to Adria and ate there a Pizza.

On the morning of September 1st we went to Borghetto di Valeggio, one of the most beautiful Villages in Italy according to the online guide I borghi più belli d’Italia. It is a village which lies on the river Mincio. The road to this village is full of vineyards of Custoza. We stopped for lunch at the restaurant Divinosteria where I drank a glass of the great red wine Valpolicella Superiore.

After lunch we took a walk along the river, we went over the Bridge Visconti and then, from Park Segurtà, we went up to the Castle Scaligero.

Around 5 p.m. o'clock we drove back on the way to Verona. Once parked, we took an ice cream and made a stop at Piazza Bra, the square in front of the Arena. We checked which was our entry to the Arena and after that we made a walk and see Piazza dell Erbe, Ponte Pietra, one of the bridges which are over the Adige river, Piazza Signori and, of course, Juliet's balcony. By the way, in the building in front of the house of Juliet there is a Relais de Charme called Il sogno di Giulietta (The Dream of Juliet). It should be very romantic.

At 8 p.m. after eating some pizza and fruit salad we went to the Arena where we waited until 9:25 pm the concert started. The Arena was nearly sold out, the atmosphere like that of a rock concert, the location very attractive and he, Giovanni Allevi, was gorgeous, as always, especially when he played his compositions for piano solo.

Next day I returned to Siena very happy for this short trip and... thinking about the next :-)

Tuscany trips: Garfagnana

If you have already been at Borgo Grondaie you know that at the Hall, near the internet point, there is a bookrack with a book entitled 'Toscana, Places of harmony' which was given us by Antonella and Caterina, the instructors of Nordic Walking.

In this book there are wonderful pictures taken by Andrea Bonfanti.

Every day I had a look at this book when I was at work looking for some new places to visit in Tuscany and... every time I was impressed by a picture of a Medieval bridge situated in a village called Borgo a Mozzano that is a little bit far from Siena, about two hours and half but... just a week ago I had the opportunity to go there and verify if this bridge was so beautiful like in the picture and it is indeed.

I went there with Mauro, a friend of Borgo Grondaie who every year come from Adria, a town in Veneto, to visit us.

Before to leave we checked directions on Google maps but at the end of our trip we realized that they were not so good. On Michelin there were better directions.

Anyway....

We took the freeway from Siena to Florence, then took the 3rd exit onto the E35 ramp to Firenze/Bologna/A11/Pisa Nord, merged onto A1 /E35, took the exit onto A11/E76 toward E80/Genova/Pisa Nord/A12/Livorno and took the exit Capannori BUT we suggest you to take exit Lucca and then the SP12 toward Borgo a Mozzano.

When we arrived we left the car at the beginning of the village, went downtown by walk till the end of that where on the right side we found the Bridge of the Maddalena, probably dating from the 14th century.

Re-christened by popular fantasy the Devil’s Bridge, it spans the Serchio with four arches of different breadth and height. According to legend, it was the devil who complited its construction in exchange for the soul of the first person to cross it.

It worth a visit, believe me!

In the village there is nothing special to see but the Bridge is really suggestive. We went over that, bought some snacks at the Bar near the Restaurant located at the bottom of the Bridge and sat down in the garden seats to admire the scenic view all around.

Looking in the map for another place to visit nearby Borgo a Mozzano, Mauro saw that we were very close to Barga, a village well known to the italians because a famous italian poet of the last century, Giovanni Pascoli, was inspired by the sound of the clock tower of the cathedral bell in writing the poem 'L'ora a Barga' (the hour at Barga).
To reach this village from Borgo a Mozzano we took again the SP12.

It is a Medieval town clinging to a terrace on the left of the Serchio. It is a picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and lanes called 'carraie' (because they are like tiers) converging toward the broad grassy square of Ardingo, at the top of the village, on which rises the Duomo, of late Medieval origin but continuously renovated over the centuries.

I liked very much this village. We walked all around, took some pictures and then stopped for dinner at a restaurant located outside the walls and called 'Il Ponte'

I definitively suggest this trip to those who stay at Borgo Grondaie for more days and decide to visit Lucca and its countryside or also to those who stop in Lucca.

Lucca is a wonderful town, famous for its square-shaped ellipse, its walls and its churchs including that of San Martino where you can admire the sculpture of Ilaria del Carretto made by Jacopo della Quercia.

the new Thelma and Louise
They arrive at the Borgo with thousands of questions about things to do but soon they got used to the Italian way of living. They spent their time... relaxing and enjoing wine.
I cannot write here their experience with our masseur but when they told me I couldn't stop laughing.
They spent two days at the cooking school and I hope they menage to organize an Italian party at home.
We love them becouse all day they had a new adventure to tell us and they had so much enthusiasm in eveything they do.
Dear Thelma ans Louise hope to see you soon at the Borgo with all suitcases....

DEAR MIGUEL: WE MISS YOU

Going on with articles about our dear guests/friends Amina and I have decided that this is Mr. Ferrer turn. A Spanish (I know that he will become crazy as I ‘ve written Spanish and not Castigliano….but I don’t know how the English translation is…….) wonderful person that loves so much the Palio race to come every year to see on August the traditional Siena horse race.
I can say THERE IS NO PALIO ON AUGUST IF FERRER IS NOT AT THE BORGO.

I cannot say when... it was the first time he came. When Amina and I speak about him the sun comes out. He makes us laugh and his gentle cares to us are the good start of a long work day.
I always says to Amina that she has to find a Castillian (now I have searched on internet the right translation) guy. She always laugh and says that I’m stupid. But my dear Miguel who do you think can stand Amina if not a Castillan man? A Saint???? Not on this life(Amina will kill me).
I think that it’s about 3 years that Mr. Ferrer comes to Siena with his young and nice fiancée. She could seem a little shy at first sight but on 2008 we had the pleasure to have a dinner all together and she is fantastic….the perfect person for Miguel.
Dear Miguel we wait for your reservation with impatience and if the crisis strikes you, too…. please come for free……you cannot wait to see you walking around with your TIN TIN t-shirt and above all we have lots of restaurants to discover together. There is nothing better to join a good meal with good friend
